November 29: I was cleared to be able to take photographs of the Miss DC USA 2010 pageant in Washington D.C. It's an exciting event for those involved, especially for the contestants and their families and friends who cheer them on. It takes a lot of work to be where they are competing in the pageant, yet it is representative of their character and lifestyle, aspirations and dreams. It is impressive to see how these young ladies take part in the community, helping others and inspiring people to be the best they can be.
I arrived early to the hotel where the pageant was to take place and was prepared to photograph the event, yet when the event starts and you have to cover it, you are "in the zone" and have to be aware of everything going on and taking your best shot with the camera. It's always interesting dealing with lighting indoors, and if I can't photograph without flash to a degree where the picture is clear and sharp, I usually rely on my flashes to freeze the moments. There were certainly some highly charged moments with emotions going on in the hotel this night.
The pageant went well and although there are clear winners to the Miss Teen USA and Miss DC USA pageants, everyone involved is certainly a winner. It's about who you are on stage and off, and that you're growing and serving others. We are more than titles, and our lives are a testament to that.
