June 12, 2014 - As part of The Front Row at Bethesda Row in Maryland, I watched the film Versailles
'73: American Runway Revolution. The website for this film says "Not
many moments in life change the course of history, shatter the status
quo and usher in a paradigm shift. But on November 28, 1973 at the
Chateau de Versailles, such a moment took place."
That day the French haute couture designers Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Emmanuel Ungaro were pitted against American designers Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows, Oscar de la Renta and Halston in a runway presentation. With an audience of royalty, millionaires and celebrities, it was a "battle" of fashion prominence, and the designs and the models who wore them made fashion history.
Although this film has been around since 2012 and has won numerous film festival awards, this night was the DC area premiere of it, and it marks a pivotal point in runway fashion history. I was impressed with this film and it's production quality. Allowing those who were there at that time to speak about their experiences told the story of what happened in a personable way, as unique as their personality and character. It's a story that reminds us that it's all about the fashion and how the designers and models present it that makes an impact in our hearts, making a difference from the inside-out.
