Level on the Playing Field

September 2 - DC United vs Seattle Sounders: I had attended a previous soccer game at RFK Stadium and I appreciated being able to go, but I felt so far away from the field. I took pictures from where I was seated, but wanted to get closer...right next to the field would be nice.

I got my opportunity to take pictures of a DC United game from the sidelines. As I walked from the media check-in area, through the dug out area and up to the field, I felt a sense of wonder. The enormity of the stadium and the field, the lights, the signage, the fans, the sounds, and being on the level of the field all contributed to a memorable experience.

The players took to the field for warm ups, and it was quite a sight to see the players preparing for the game, both physically and mentally. Tonight's game was to conclude the 96th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final. The field was cleared and the opening ceremony for the game started including the presentation of the team's flags, the singing of the national anthem, and the seeing the players walk out onto the field. It was time to get into my position at the end of the field. I had rented a Nikon 80-400mm VR f/4.5-5.6D lens to get closer into the soccer action. I was scanning the field and had to try and anticipate where the players and the soccer ball was going to be to get a good shot. I had to work alongside other photographers as we all wanted to cover the game. After the game was the trophy ceremony and I stayed to watch everything and then went home to process the pictures I took. Here are some of my favorite shots:
