DC Tattoo Expo and the Miss DC Pin-Up Contest No. 4
The DC Tattoo Arts Expo was January 16-19, presented by Exposed Tattoo & Baller Inc. The expo was held again at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. I was at this expo years ago covering it for DC Hot Spots and I've returned to the expo because it's a great place to experience the Tattoo culture and because I enjoy art. The expo also hosts the Miss DC Pin-Up contest and this was it's fourth year running. I also enjoy watching shows about tattoo artists such as Best Ink, Bad Ink and LA Ink. The DC Tattoo Expo hosts over 160 tattoo artists from all over the area and the world with over 16,000 sq. ft. of space in the hotel. So whether you just want to visit or if you want to get a tattoo, there is plenty here for people. Here are some photos from the expo and from the pin-up contest. Enjoy the body art, and what I enjoy is to also hear the stories behind the tattoos.
Jonathan Cheban in DC
It seems like everyone knows about Kim Kardashian and their family and some of their friends. Kim's BFF (Best Friends Forever) Jonathan Cheban may ring a bell because of his appearances on the shows Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and also Kourntney and Kim Take Miami. Jonathan was also on the second episode of the seventh season of The Millionaire Matchmaker, which aired on December 12, 2013 on the Bravo Network. Jonathan Cheban is the founder and former CEO of CommandPR, a full-service public
relations firm with offices in both New York City and Los Angeles, and as of March 2013 Jonathan remains as a consultant to the firm.
On Friday January 17th, Jonathan Cheban was in DC to host a party at the popular and high-profile night club and lounge called The Huxley. I got an invite to the event and I also heard a short radio interview on HOT 99.5 where Jonathan said he'll be at The Huxley for most of the night. So I went to check it out.
I arrived at The Huxley before Midnight and hung out while more and more people arrived. I'm sure many of them were there because of Jonathan Cheban, and soon after he arrived with his crew and sat at his table, lines started forming to see him. Jonathan was dressed well and seemed to have his haircut a bit shorter than normal, and he looked handsome. Jonathan was friendly and allowed lots of guests to have their picture taken with him with their mobile phones. This went on throughout the night and bottles came to his table a couple times. I was able to get this photograph of Jonathan with a couple of the bottle waitresses there. So it was cool that he visited this club in DC and hung out almost till it closed. It seems like there are more and more celebrities visiting DC, and there's no reason to not visit the nation's capital with so many things to see and do. I hope you had a good time Jonathan, and it looks like you did.

An Officer and an Auction
On Friday, January 17th from 7-10:00
pm, the 2nd annual Officer and an Auction: Stars and Studs charity
bachelor auction was held at The Embassy of Austria.
The GI Film Festival (GIFF) in partnership with Sip with Socialites, hosted an incredible night featuring Military bachelors from all branches of service plus some celebrities up for auction to raise funds for the GI Film Festival. There was also a silent auction with over 60 items, including a luxurious vacation stay at a home in Mexico.
The special guest celebrity bachelors were Parker Young from ABC’s SUBURGATORY and FOX’s new hit show, “Enlisted,” and Chef Spike from Bravo’s “Top Chef.” Bidders also got a chance to win a date in Los Angeles with actor Mark Valley from ABC’s “Body of Proof.” The Event Emcee was Britt McHenry, sports reporter for ABC7/WJLA-TV and News Channel 8.
Delicious appetizers were provided by Lebanese Taverna and by Chef Seb of Amoo's House of Kabob, cigars offered by La Palina, bubbly and wine by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Beer by MillerCoors, a fun photo booth, and Heaven & Elle Haute Beauty Bar provided vintage beauty looks on site.
The VIP guests got all the above goodies as well as these additional ones: a dessert bar, gelato bar provided by Dolci Gelati, upgraded spirits, wine and beer bar, reserved seating during the entertainment portion, access to VIP lounge, special gift bags and more.

I did a photo shoot of Geoff Stults and Parker Young from the FOX show Enlisted one week ago and it turns out that I was asked by the co-founder and director of the GI Film Festival to be one of the bachelors in this event. So I did it, and I took some pictures with my compact camera throughout the night. It was humbling to be one of the bachelors, but it was for a good cause and for fun too. Here are some of my photos from the night. HOOAH!

Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.
Living in the Washington DC area, I am close to the Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King, Jr gave his famous "I Have a Dream Speech." That speech was delivered on August 28, 1963, yet it reverberates throughout the generations. It's nice to be relatively close to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial near the Tidal Basin. In the past I've taken pictures of the memorial there and wanted to share a couple photos and some of my favorite MLK quotes in honor of him and today being a national holiday for him.

Old & New - Being All We Can Be - Enlisted Stars
There are lots of good goals and intentions for this new year, and it feels like it takes the first couple weeks to even a month for plans to start kicking in and for changes to take place. The middle of January is a memorable time for me as I'm reminded of the time of my initial start date with the U.S. Army as a 19D Cavalry Scout. It was a time where I wanted to start a new life, and in a sense, to tear down the old me, and bring about the new me. The Army identified the skills that we had and put them to use. In addition to training to be a soldier in basic training, I was assigned as the unit artist. I painted a mural at the top of the stairs in our barracks, in addition to other things. Throughout my time on active duty in Fort Knox, KY, I also took some pictures with a disposable camera. I've had an interest in photography for a few years, even taking a photography class in High School and some in College, but I wasn't too serious about it. Toward the end of my active duty tenure, I also spent some time in a graphics shop. All this would help me in my path as a photographer.
I wanted to share some photos of me in the Army and reinforce the importance of capturing key moments in life. I'm glad to have some kind of photographic record of experiences in my life. It shows the progression of life. An old slogan in the Army was "Be All You Can Be," and I liked it. I know we all want to be the best we can be in life and do the best we can in our profession. So may we start doing the things we need to be where we want to be. Sometimes I look back and wish I had tried harder or focused more. So my resolve is even more strengthened to pursue the passions in my life.
On January 10th I was reminded about my time in the U.S. Army as an enlisted soldier as I was asked to photograph Geoff Stults and Parker Young, a couple stars from the new TV show called "Enlisted" for the GI Film Festival (GIFF). According to the website for the show, "ENLISTED is an irreverent and heartfelt single-camera comedy about three brothers on a small Florida Army post and the group of misfits who surround them." Geoff and Parker were being interviewed for GIFF. They were dressed well, even in their casual clothes, which had a military look and feel to them. It turns out that the show Enlisted premieres on FOX the evening of January 10, 2014.
A couple of the things I have planned for this month is to redo my website and blog, and perhaps other things. I also plan to write an article about buying a DSLR, as many people want advice on how to go about getting one and which one to get. It's very exciting to imagine someone getting their first DSLR, but it can also be a daunting and overwhelming decision. I want to help others with photography as I've been helped in the past and in the present. All the best in your endeavors.
