On Saturday January 14th, VIP Exclusive Fashion celebrated 8 Years in the DMV with a Reunion Fashion Night at Panache Tysons. The beautiful and stylish restaurant welcomed guests in from the cold and guests warmed up to pictures and networking with other guests. When it came time for the runway show, everyone was in anticipation. It was an exciting experience taking in the fashion show and watching the models walk the red carpet runway. It was a night of fashion, reunion and networking.

Taking a Chance, Getting Out There More

January 7, 2012 - Yesterday was the First Friday of the Year! Obviously the start of the new year is a prime time to make a good start of things and even take some risks. I submitted three images to the B&W+ RangeFinder Alternative Photographic Processes Contest.

There are a panel of judges and there are nice prizes. There's also a "People's Choice" vote which is a section apart from the rest of the contest and the votes will not influence the judges." Even if I don't win, it's good to try and get out there. I'm celebrating photography in these pictures, loving the black and white beauty of it all. I've posted the three images that I submitted here on my blog. Out of the thousands upon thousands of photos I have in my archives, I decided to go with a few fashion images.

Promising New Year

January 1, 2012 - I spent New Year's Eve at an event called Big Night DC in the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor on the Potomac just inside of Maryland. Big Night DC is touted as the largest and most incredible New Year's Eve gala with 200,000+ square feet of space with 15 themed party areas, 6 dance floors, an incredible lineup of bands, world-class DJ's, first class cuisine and a huge Midnight celebration.

I was also at Big Night DC last year at the same place and it was just as enjoyable. There are so many people that come out to this event and it feels crowded. The good thing about National Harbor is that it's easy to get to and there isn't much traffic going to or leaving there, and there are huge parking garages near the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

I was roving around all over the Big Night party areas yet near Midnight I figured the place to be was in the party room with the live bands playing. There was a countdown there and when Midnight hit it was like a ticker tape parade in the air while the masses of people cheered. I had a very productive year in photography last year and 2o12 looks promising as I want to do things differently with my direction in photography and make better decisions and get better results.

Two Years of One Lounge Birthday Toy Drive Event

December 15, 2011 - It was the second anniversary of One Lounge and also a benefit for the Washington Children's Hospital. Guests enjoyed a three hour premium open bar with cocktails, passed hors d'oeuvres (such as olive tapenade stuffed mushrooms, seared sea scallops, baby lamb chops and junior bacon cheeseburgers), Live Jazz with The Pete Muldoon Band, a Svedka photo booth, celebrity guests and some talented DJs. Co-owners Seth McClelland and Niko Papademetriou encouraged guests to bring a packaged toy for kids in need or to participate in the exclusive silent auction.

Photo Shoot at Iwo Jima of Marine Chick

December 14, 2011 - A friend of mine called me and told me of an opportunity to photograph Capt Sarah Plummer of the Marine Corps (aka Marine Chick) while she was in the DC area. There wasn't much advance notice, but I found the time to fit the photo shoot in one afternoon.

We all felt that the Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington, VA was a great and appropriate location for this shoot. The sky was overcast but as we kept shooting throughout the afternoon, the sun started to come out. Toward the end of our shoot I was able to get the shot that is pictured below, which I think best represents Sarah and her story.

Dream Date Auction benefitting Chris4Life

December 10, 2011 - In an effort to raise funds to benefit the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, a second annual dream date auction was held at District Lounge in Adams Morgan, DC. How peculiar that some of the dream dates auctioned for this benefit are none other than celebrities from The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and The Bachelor Pad TV shows!

The celebrities made a special trip to DC for this event and Michelle Money and Graham Bunn returned to DC to support Chris4Life after having attended the Chris4Life Blue Hope Bash on October 26, 2011. Other celebrity reality stars that were up for the dream date auction were Emily Maynard (winner of The Bachelor Season 13), Dave Good (Bachelorette Season 5 and Winnter of The Bachelor Pad Season 1), and Erica Rose (The Bachelor Season 9 and The Bachelor Pad Season 2).

Other DC notables that were up for the dream date auction were Nicole Hawkins, Mike Ponticelli, Sam Sanders, Julie Savignon and DJ Saul.

The event was emceed by Pamela Sorensen of Pamela's Punch. The media contact is Maurisa Turner Potts of Spotted MP Marketing and Public Relations. It was an enjoyable time having the dream date celebrities in the spacious District Lounge and everyone was privy to a multitude of photo opportunities. Even for such a busy weekend evening, there was still a sizable crowd and the auction raised over $5000. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Chris4Life Patient, Treatment & Care Program.

Friendlylook Soft Launch

December 10, 2011 - A celebratory soft launch of friendlylook splashed into Dirty Martini in the form of a happy hour. It was a time to meet and mingle with DC's social media mavens, eligible singles, tech leaders, and others in the media arena along with the friendlylook founders and team.

Karim Rashid at Alessi in DC

December 7, 2011 - Internationally recognized and award-winning designer Karim Rashid was at Alessi, the kitchen and housewares (and more) store in Georgetown DC. There was a meet and greet with Karim along with product signing.

Alessi is a family company since 1921. According to the Alessi Institutional Video, "I think that Alessi, as Italian Design Factory, is essentially a research laboratory operating in the field of applied arts, i.e. design. Our role is to continually mediate between the most interesting expressions of international creativity in the product design on one side and the consumer's wishes or better their dreams on the other."

Glenda Bailey Book Celebration and Signing

December 7, 2011 - Harper's Bazaar Greatest Hits event was a hit! - It was a rainy evening in Georgetown yet scores of people came out to celebrate the publication of Harper's Bazaar Greatest Hits. There was a book signing event with Glenda Bailey, Editor in Chief of Harper's Bazaar at the COACH store at 3259 M Street NW Washington, DC.

When guests walked into the COACH store they were greeted well: their coat was offered to be taken to the back and desserts and drinks were offered. The greatest hits book is a beautiful collection of photographs and commentary from a decade of covers under the editor in chief direction of Glenda Bailey. Guests were able to purchase the book and have it signed and many had their picture taken with Glenda. It was a special treat in having Glenda here and there was much to celebrate and the celebration continues in the pages of Harper's Bazaar, America's longest running fashion magazine.

Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It, LIVE!

On December 2nd, 2011 it was heralded that Scott Kelby is coming to town for his seminar: Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It, LIVE! Many photographers and photography enthusiasts attended and you had to be interested to spend the day in a seminar. It's fortunate to have Scott Kelby and his crew stop in DC as part of their teaching tour.

The teaching session of the day were: Lighting and Retouching for Headshots, Dramatic Light & Retouching Techniques, Edgy Light & High Contrast Post Processing, Lighting & Retouching for Fashion & Glamour, and Compositing: Lighting & Photoshop Techniques. There was a 15 minute break between sessions and an hour for lunch. The day went by quickly enough and there was a lot of information presented, which made it well worth the price of admission. It's good to have Kelby Training as a resource available to those who are members. Congratulations to Scott for being named by Scott Bourne of Photo Focus for being the 2011 Educator of the Year.

With so much information, may photographers put what was taught into practice. I definitely attend these seminars as a source of inspiration and there's also a sense of community in gathering with other photographers. May we encourage one another to the next level in our photography aspirations.

Miss DC USA 2012 Monique Thompkins - Photo Shoot and Interview

November 28, 2011 - I had the pleasure of photographing and interviewing Miss DC USA 2012 Monique Thompkins, the day after her pageant win.

Describe your Miss DC USA pageant experience?
It's nothing but positive. I met new people and made so many friends during the two days of competition. It all kind of went by so fast. During this competition, you meet others like yourself which is so refreshing. You also see what's unique about yourself. It's our nature to compare, but the things that are different about you are what makes you unique.

* How did you get the idea to do this pageant?
I used to watch pageants as a young girl, I was inspired, but never thought it was something I could do. I did a military local tour for the Marines for the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders (WRC). While on tour, the conversation came up about pageants. I was going to do it last year, but got scared. Cheerleaders from different teams on this local tour were talking and people encouraged me to participate. I wanted to prove to myself I could do this. You can do anything you want to do. You're never a failure unless you never try.

* You were born and raised in the DC area, so what do you think of Washington DC?
I absolutely love DC. After graduating from college in Philadelphia, it was suggested to me to move to LA to continue with dance, but everything in me just told me I had to come back home. When you live here for so long you take the beauty of this city for granted. Those four years away in college reminded me just how much DC meant to me.

* What are your favorite things to do?
My top 3:
Museums - I'm fortunate that DC has a lot of museums!
Movie buff - in theater or at home.
Traveling - I enjoy getting away and having some "me time."

* How did you get into Cheerleading?
I was a freshman at the University of the Arts. When I turned 18 I tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleading Squad and was the youngest on the team at the time. During my senior year, I knew I wanted to be with the Redskins so in March I auditioned for their Cheerleading Squad and made the team in April. I wasn't going to graduate until May, so I was in Philadelphia during the day for classes and drove to DC for WRC practice two nights a week. Even with all that I graduated with a 3.8 that year. I was committed to the team. If you have something you want to do, just do it, no excuses.

* What are things you are thankful for or appreciate?
I have so much to be thankful for, where to begin? My health, a supportive family, amazing career, 40 women I cheer with that I can call true friends and extended family, wonderful friends. This list would go on for days. I appreciate thoughtfulness. It’s never about how big, expensive, grand or small and simple something is, but the thought that was put into it means everything to me. I never take anything for granted. I am truly blessed.

* Describe your time with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America?
I was a mentor during junior year of college. The person I mentored went through four or five big sisters, and had a hard time opening up to people so I wanted the challenge. I met her at her school once or twice a week at her lunch period. She ended up seeing we had something in common and ended up opening up to me. That was the day I realized that mentoring was something that I was not only passionate about but sought to do. She really impacted my life.

* What is your lifestyle regimen for eating, drinking and exercising?
I am a junk food LOVER! And I love trying new foods; however, I am a pretty picky eater. My family loves to eat healthy. I wasn’t raised to eat beef or pork and I hear all the time I am missing out. I think my junk food obsession is my way of rebelling against my healthy side. Being a cheerleader provides a lot of physical activity. We practice twice a week for about 4 hours and game days for cheerleaders are 9 hours long (with morning practice, game day appearances and the game itself). Every now and then you can catch me in the gym doing strictly cardio or jogging around my neighborhood. I am always on the go!

* Who are your role models?
I have so many but I had a mentor at 13 named Janette Gillis and she was my FIRST role model. Mrs. Gillis was my middle school dance teacher. She was always poised, easy to talk to, and she was tough on you with a kind heart. She achieved so much and I wanted to be just like her. She impacted me so much that I attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown as well as the University of the Arts just like she did. She always believed in me, still does.

* Where do you see yourself in the future and what you'll be doing?
I'm never content with my life. I can't say where I'll be in a certain time of my life. I can get a goal in my head at the spur of the moment and that is my goal to achieve right then and there. Once that goal is accomplished I have another one. So my ultimate goal in life is to leave a positive mark on the places I go and the people I meet.

Miss DC USA 2012 Pageant

November 27, 2011 - At the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington DC the Miss DC Teen USA 2012 and Miss DC USA 2012 Pageant was held. It was a long-awaited and exciting evening. It was a very competitive pageant which made the judging all the more critical, but there can be only one winner. Congratulations to Miss DC Teen USA 2012 Sierra Hadley and to Miss DC USA 2012 Monique Thompkins. Thanks to Miss DC Teen USA 2011 Imani Bentham and Miss DC USA 2011 Heather Swann for a wonderful year representing DC.

"American Girl Tori" Photo Shoot

November 20, 2011 - Photo Shoot at Pentagon Row, Arlington, VA. It's always a collaboration in working on a photo shoot between all involved. Tori the model came up with the concepts and styling, and we made it work from there with the time we had and the location. Thanks to Zara Korutz for hair styling and Laura Marie for makeup, and to Susan Ostrowski for her model dog Lily Bay Petunia Paris, for Vanessa Dennis' dog Martini modeling and for Vanessa's assistance with the shoot.

Veterans Day Tribute and My Vacation Cruise

November 11-19, 2011 - It has been a very productive year and I feel like it's been non-stop work with just a few short breaks scattered throughout the year. It was about time for a vacation and so I went on a cruise with over 40 friends and acquaintances. Our itinerary was Miami, Florida; Half Moon Cay, Bahamas; Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas; San Juan Puerto Rico; Grand Turk Island; and back to Miami, Florida. It was nice to be on vacation, but of course I still brought my camera to document my travels, especially as I had never been to these ports of call other than Miami. Here's a summary of each port we visited.

11/11/11 -Miami: My vacation started out by taking a flight to Miami International Airport (MIA). What an amazing date for Veterans Day, yet every Veterans Day is a special and solemn remembrance of what our veterans have done for our country and thanks to all those who currently serve too. Starting my vacation on Veterans Day, I felt appreciative for freedom and being able to enjoy it. I am a veteran of the U.S. Army as a Cavalry Scout and I am proud to have served. I've posted a few photos and an animated slideshow as a tribute to Veterans and Veterans Day.

Streets of Georgetown with Joseph Abboud

November 9, 2011 - Grand Party Celebrates the Streets of Georgetown. At 1254 Wisconsin Ave NW, a new store has hit the streets in DC with a celebratory cocktail party for the HMX Group’s STREETS OF GEORGETOWN Grand Opening with celebrated designer Joseph Abboud and CEO Doug Williams.

A plethora of guests occupied much of the store marveling over the handsomeness of it, socializing, consuming Chef Todd Gray's fall hor d'oeuvres and cocktails. A live band added a classiness to the atmosphere. From 6-9pm the party flourished and hopefully the Streets of Georgetown will flourish, bringing high quality menswear to the DC scene and beyond.

A Fashionable Autumn - Photo Shoot

Nov 6, 2011 - I met Rachel Annamarie almost two years ago through seeing each other at events. She's a university student studying Broadcast Journalism/Theater and she is a Model/Actress with Model Management Agency Philadelphia. I had taken pictures of her at various events and in the numerous fashion shows she modeled and walked in. It was time do an official photo shoot of her.

With the hair styling services of Zara Korutz and the makeup artistry of Laura Marie of Red Door Spas in Pentagon Row, Arlington VA, we were able to give Rachel the look that was needed for the shoot. The clothes to be worn was planned ahead of time and we had our concepts down. Being fairly familiar with the area and just by scouting around, we found a few locations and Rachel had a different look for each location. It was a long afternoon but we felt we got some good images out of the shoot outdoors and some indoors too. Here are a few of my favorites.

WELLTA Spring/Summer 2012

November 5, 2011 - A Night of Fashion. The first name of the designer Wellta is also the name of her fashion line which had it's debut show in DC. It was the Spring/Summer 2012 dress collection consisting of the Little Black Dress Collection and The Eternity Dress. I first met Wellta on August 20th at the Ink Cosmetics Launch Party & Fashion Industry Network Event at L2 Lounge in Georgetown. Wellta's dresses were in a fashion show there and hair styling was done by the W Salon and makeup by Ink Cosmetics. Many of the people that were involved in the August 20th event were involved with the November 5th event that introduced Wellta's dress collection.

Smith Commons Dining Room & Public House is a three-story neighborhood bistro on the H St. NE corridor. This venue features a main dining room and main bar on the first floor, and “the commons” or public house on levels two and three, with outdoor patios, individual bars, and dining tables. Everything on level three was cleared away to give the Wellta event room to move and soon it was a bustling area filled with guests eager to see the Wellta dress collection.

The models were lined up in a room and came out one by one with Wellta describing the dresses. Three of the models were on platforms to present the dresses: 1) Sequin Open Back Dress 2) Front Zip Gown 3) Full Bodied Skirted Black Dress with Mesh Back. Two other models with Wellta dresses walked around for their presentation of the dresses. It was a successful night with the official launch of Wellta. http://www.WELL-TA.com

Jason & Alesha Engagement Outing

November 5, 2011 - It was about that time. I had known Jason for a few years after meeting him at a Halloween party. At that time he wasn't wearing a costume as he dropped by the house I was at for this party, before he went home. Even though I was dressed up like Legolas from the Lord of the Rings, we still connected and continued our friendship over the years. Our places of work were fairly close to each other, so we'd have lunch from time to time.

Life got busy and we hadn't seen in each in awhile, but it's great to have recently reconnected. I was happy to hear that he got engaged to Alesha. They've been loyal and steadfast with one another and they compliment each other well. I was glad to meet Alesha as they wanted to discuss having me photograph their wedding. We actually all met up a couple times for dinner to get to know each other better and work some details out. They also wanted some pictures taken during their engagement time and wanted to be able to send out save the date cards.

We planned ahead and settled on November 5th at a park to have me photograph them there. We brought along our bikes to ride on the trail. It was early afternoon when we started with the pictures and even though it was a bit chilly, we still enjoyed being outside. It was slowly warming up and it was rather comfortable by the time we were finished mid-afternoon. We've got the date saved for the wedding day and I'll be overjoyed in capturing it.

FotoWeek Launch Party 2011

November 4, 2011 - FotoWeek Launch Party. After the exclusive preview opening of this year's exhibitions at FotoWeek Central, the celebration continued at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. A long line of guests awaited the opening of the Corcoran doors and at 8:30pm people flooded the halls. It was a fitting venue for this party. FatBack DJs, big screen projections, photo booths, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres kept people moving and happy.

Walk This Way for Becky's Fund

November 2, 2011 - Becky's Fund and Eric Finn Custom Clothiers Presents "Walk this Way" 2011

On November 2 guests arrived at the beautiful Andrew Mellon Auditorium to come together and take a stand against domestic violence at the 2011 "Walk This Way" annual event. Co-hosted by Comcast Sportsnet's Julie Donaldson and Fox's Steve Chenevey, this event featured delicious food, fashion, and Art Soiree Co. added an artistic touch to the evening by presenting a special art exhibit of local artists' work as part of their ~Art Can Make A Difference~ project. The Washington Redskins' Brian Orakpo, Anthony Armstrong, DeAngelo Hall, Capitals' Karl Alzner, John Carlson, Nick Backstrom and DC United's Ben Olsen along with Art Soiree support Becky's Fund's efforts in promoting the prevention of domestic and dating violence in our community.

Honorary Host Committee Members: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, Senator Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Co-Author of VAWA Congresswoman Louise Slaughter of New York, Congresswoman Kathy Hochul of New York, Congressman Dan Boren of Oklahoma, Congressman Ted Poe of Texas, House Democratic Senior Whip Congressman Mike Honda of California and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia.

November 1, 2011 - The Up From Under benefit was held at the Longview Gallery in DC to help raise awareness and funding to build homes for the homeless and those devastated by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Featuring Bryan Voltaggio and his cuisine from his world-renowned restaurant VOLT! There were other featured chef's tables including: Spike Gjede, Mike Isabella, Matt Hill, and RJ Cooper.

There was a silent auction and art auction featuring renowned photographers. Eric Hilton from Thievery Corporation and John Thornley from US Royalty were the event's DJ's. There was also a drawing for a winner to receive one week of being able to drive around a Chevrolet Volt!

A Halloween Styled Night at Lincoln

October 29, 2011 - It was Halloween weekend and October 29th was to be Lincoln restaurant's first Halloween party. I was commissioned to cover this party by one of the party hosts that invited a plethora of friends. Many were invited and many attended, filling up much of the space allotted for the party.

There was still enough room for costumed revelers to parade around and socialize with one another. I enjoyed seeing so many people come out and the diversity of the costumes. Guests enjoyed appetizers, candy and drinks including the special punch that was made for this occasion. Lincoln restaurant was a great venue and atmosphere for this event. It was packed all evening and it was great to see so many people enjoy the revelry that is Halloween.

Crystal Jo Fashion Line Launch in DC

October 27, 2011 - Crystal Hannon launched her Spring and Summer Pret-a-Porter fashion line called Crystal Jo in DC, which already has a good client following in her hometown of Annapolis. Crystal had her premiere fashion show at the historic City Tavern Club (CTC) in Georgetown, Washington DC.

The event was guest list only and the guests filled the upper floor of the CTC. Hors D'Oeuvres and an open bar were available and guests took advantage of the step and repeat to have their pictures taken. Four long rows of chairs were lined up with a walking path down the middle and on either side. There were gift bags by Crystal Jo for those sitting in the front rows.

The show started and each model that walked had an air of classiness and femininity. The clothing was comprised of French lace, Italian wool, and silk. The models walked effortlessly down the rows and beauty was all around. There was a sense of Parisian romance throughout the show and it left a beautiful impression to the guests.

Chris4Life - Blue Hope Bash

October 26, 2011 - Hope is in the Air, Blue is Everywhere. At the Decatur House in Washington DC, the inaugural Blue Hope Bash by Chris4Life.org took place near The White House.

This year’s event theme is “Hope” and that sentiment was reflected with live entertainment from Ted Garber and band, speeches from Members of Congress, a nice dinner, signature
cocktails, silent auction, local business leaders, celebrities and inspirational stories from colon cancer survivors.

The event was emceed by ABC7/WJLA-TV health reporter Jennifer Donelan and featured a
keynote address presented by Congressman Dan Boren (D-OK) who lost his mother to colon cancer.

Dr. John Marshall (Clinical Director of Oncology, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center) spoke from the stage, and Arch Campbell (ABC7/WJLA-TV) spoke from a video presentation. Other Honorary Co-Chairs include Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Congresswoman Sue Myrick (R-NC), Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI),

Michael Jakaitis (Morning Drive Editor, WTOP News) was there. ABC’s The Bachelor
Pad reality show star Michelle Money spoke from the stage. She recently lost her father to colon cancer and gave a moving speech. Michelle lost her father in August 2011 due to colon cancer and has become an advocate for colon cancer awareness. Michelle has partnered with 46NYC to design a shirt to benefit colon cancer awareness. Graham Bunn, also from The Bachelor Pad was there to accompany her along with Michelle's mother. Graham is part of 46NYC and recognized the Chris4Life charity and gave a donation to them.

After a Chris4Life video was shown, Michael Sapienza, Executive Director for Chris4Life spoke about Chris4Life, the Blue Hope Bash and the importance of early detection of colon cancer.

The principal mission of the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation is to permanently eliminate the threat of colon cancer through discovery of a cure. Chris4Life is committed to significantly improving the treatment experience for patients and caregivers, and to dramatically raise awareness about colon cancer in general.

Miss Sinergy Woman of the Future Competition

October 22, 2011 - Sinergy was in the Air

The 2012 Miss Sinergy Woman of the Future Competition has been planned for months and it came down to this exciting night at the Embassy of France in DC where twenty ladies competed at this event. "The Miss Sinergy competition is held annually to crown and promote a charitable ambassador who creates and champions the platform of her choice during her twelve month reign."

Guests mingled and enjoyed an open bar and hors d'oeuvres and some had their pictures taken in front of the step and repeat. The venue was alive with anticipation and excitement for the competition and guests soon filled the auditorium with all eyes on the stage. Dancing With The Stars (Australia) Joshua Horner and D.C.'s Stefanie Ball emceed this event. There was a special performance by Danish star MEDINA! It was Medina's first time in the United States and this event was glad to have her sing some of her songs.

An Evening of Fashion at The W

October 19, 2011 - It was certainly an evening of fashion at the beautiful W hotel in Washington DC where this event took place to benefit the Children's National Medical Center. This event is presented by Ninos Rising in association with Mundovision Media, and BRAG! Models Agency.

Executive Chef and Restaurant Owner, Mike Cordero has supported many causes through the years and decided to begin a cause he is passionate about (Ninos Rising). Mike grew up in an under privileged home in the South Bronx in NYC, and knows firsthand what it is like to have so many strikes against you. He is now giving back to the community.

"Children's National Medical Center is the only exclusive provider of pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area and is the only freestanding children's hospital between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Norfolk, and Atlanta. Serving the nation's children for over 140 years, is a proven leader in the development and application of innovative new treatments for childhood illness and injury."

Sports Anchors Britt McHenry and Jorge Andres served as the events hosts and Aaron Machado from Project Runway served as the Fashion Host for the evening. Makeup and hair styling was done by Ink Cosmetics and W Salon. The Fashion Show featured designs by Red Chapter, Donovan England and Tsyndyma. DJ Neekola helped create an energetic and atmospheric vibe within the POV Lounge and there were dynamic performances by international artist Jason Cerda and also by two child virtuoso performers: Alex Fadul, and Isaiah Lemons.

Josephine & Belvedere Red Make a Grand Splash

On Tuesday October 18 from 7-11pm the gorgeous Josephine nightclub and lounge "painted the town red" with Belvedere Vodka for the launch of Belvedere Red. The RED partnership supports the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This night was also a preview event for Josephine's reopening with chic new decor and an extra lounge room.

Guests enjoyed a complimentary four-hour open bar with a selection of Belvedere Red cocktails and Moet & Chandon champagne. October 13, 2011 - The Shops at Wisconsin Place in Chevy Chase MD hosted the Passport to Style fashion event in their courtyard area. Just like last year, it was under a big white tent at the corner of Wisconsin Ave and Willard Ave. It makes for a nice open location and outdoor event, yet the weather this day was sketchy. By the time the event started the rain stopped but later on it rained hard. Yet the rain didn't stop the event from happening with everything being under the spacious tent.

Passport to Style gives a fresh perspective on fall fashion and trends, giving inspiration on what to wear, what to add, and how to pull looks together. The event brings together fashion, beauty, food and wine, and it benefits two amazing charities: Hope for Henry and Fashion for Paws. It was wonderful to see everybody come together: adults, children and pets enjoying the evening.

Blue Ridge Invitational - Invited by a Friend

October 10, 2011 - I'm not necessarily a golf kind of guy, but growing up I enjoyed playing golf arcade/video games and I also enjoy the occasional miniature golf game. I spent some time with a fellow photographer and old friend the day before and that evening he called to tell me about this event he was covering. It was the Blue Ridge Invitational at the luxurious Creighton Farms in Aldie, VA.

My friend Guy was to photograph the Blue Ridge Invitational which was a local charity golf event in support of Blue Ridge Speech and Hearing. Guy was able to cover the event on his own but thought it would be a good idea to have me out to experience the venue and event while taking pictures. Another photographer that Guy knows named Joey was also there to take pictures. After a nice lunch at the clubhouse I got to drive my own golf cart and rode around like a kid in an amusement park. It was a fun ride and I was able to take a lot of scenic pictures of the golf course and of people playing golf.

Toward the end of the playing time, we parked our golf carts high up on a hill and enjoyed some tomato basil soup prepared for us as we took more pictures. It was late in the afternoon and time to go back to the clubhouse. The photographers had time to chat about the event and of course talk a bit about photography. It was a good afternoon with great weather, and it was nice to get some golf course pictures. After this experience I understood a little more about how relaxing golf is as not only a game, but an appreciation of the beautiful nature around us. How simple, but amazing it is just be able to see, hear and speak. It seems like golf can allow you to drive your thoughts to a different place and even clear your mind, so that you may be ready to go from the green to the concrete jungles of our everyday world. Maryland Renaissance Festival - Huzzah!

October 9, 2011 - The Maryland Renaissance Festival (coined Rennfest as an abbreviation to many) is a recreation of a 16th century English village, like a medieval amusement park. The village is named Revel Grove and is on a beautiful 25-acre wooded site with 85 acres of free parking. The festival is located in Anne Arundel County in Crownsville, just outside of Annapolis, MD, and is about 33 miles from DC.

The village consists of more than 130 craft shops, numerous food booths, five pubs, ten major stages, a Jousting Arena and lots of games. There's something there for everyone, kids and adults alike. This event is the regions premier outdoor event and is the second largest Renaissance Festival in the country. The festival started in 1977 as a ramshackle village and has become a large community of more than 1,300 participants and 280,000 guests annually that come out on Saturdays and Sundays from the end of August through just after mid-October.

I have gone to this festival for many years and even though many of the things in the festival are the same or similar annually, I have enjoyed each visit. It's a great place to spend several hours with friends. You can dress up in renaissance era clothing, rent clothing or just come as you are. I always bring a camera to capture the experience and fun.

Some may wonder if they would enjoy such a festival, as it seems so far and away from modern-day life. The renaissance era may not interest some, but it is a part of history and history affects the future. I view this festival as a way to take a break from the cares of the "real world" and have a uniquely enjoyable time. It's fascinating to see how things were like and to appreciate the many things that the renaissance brought to improve life such as with the arts, literature, crafts, inventions and also with the way we communicate and interact with one another. There is so much to do at the festival and just going once may not seem like enough.

Rebeca - Modeling in Urban Territory

October 8, 2011 - It was a gorgeous warm and sunny day, and likely one of the few remaining truly ideal weather days left for the year. I met Rebeca last month and we also have mutual friends. She's modeled before and after photographing her once at an event, we set up a photo shoot in DC.

Due to our schedules we did a late morning/early afternoon shoot. Our location for the shoot was in a residential building which gave the shoot an urban appeal. Thanks to our mutual friend Leyla for helping with makeup and for the location. It was an enjoyable afternoon and I think we got some nice images out of it.

A Night of Pink Hope

October 8, 2011 - Being October, it's breast cancer awareness month and this event called "A Night of Pink Hope" gave a new voice to young women battling breast cancer and gave back to the community. This event at The Sheraton Annapolis, showcased beauty and fashion in a special way.

The mission of the evening was to use the talents of stylists in hair and makeup to achieve a couple goals: 1) raise awareness about what it means to be a young woman battling breast cancer and 2) showcase the diversity of Robert Andrew stylists under the direction of Artist Director and Redkin Designer Brian Washburn.

The event gave thanks to clothing designers Cloud 9 and Zweet Sportswear, as well as their four jewelry sponsors: Diamond Cutters of Maryland, Mijou Jewelry, Little Treasury Jewelers and Zachary's Jewelers.

The Pink Hearts of Hope (PHH) Fund of The We Believe Foundation is creating a legacy for the Funds first Director Rosemary Quade who wanted to reach beyond her battle with breast cancer and give back to the young adults she loved very much. Rosemary's vision and dream lives on through the support of Pink Hearts for Hope Fund.

It was a very full and fulfilling evening with guests enjoying the many things on the agenda such as the VIP Cocktail Hour, Silent Auction, Hors d'overes and Cocktails. A step and repeat was set up and many photographs were taken of the guests, which included several local celebrities.

The FACES (Fashion, Attitude, Courage, Energy, Survival) show brought out fashion with stories from those affected by breast cancer and more was shared with platform models around the room. After that show the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders and Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders each gave a performance that stomped the runway. The silent auction was held and many people contributed to the cause.

Several people were responsible for helping to make this event a success including: Paul Wharton was the master of ceremonies. October 6, 2011 - It's PINKTOBER. "The answer is out there. Together we'll find it." Pinktober is Hard Rock Cafe's campaign for breast cancer awareness.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Hard Rock Cafe Washington DC along with HOT 99.5 rocked for the fight against breast cancer in presenting an appearance and performance by Pia Toscano of American Idol fame. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Breast Cancer Research at City of Hope.

Pink Jams! recently signed a partnership deal with Hard Rock Café and as a partner, I and others were given complimentary tickets to attend the event. Pink Jams! is a Washington DC area non-profit promoting early detection and breast cancer awareness to young men and women.

There was a VIP meet and greet with Pia Toscano before her performance and then Pia performed by singing several songs, some of which were sung during her time on American Idol. Pia was amazing to hear and she also answered questions from the audience. Pia donated a dress that she wore during her American Idol appearance to Hard Rock Cafe.

After her performance Pia spent a few minutes having pictures taken with her fans. I was able to get a photograph of Pia up close and it was good to see her and have her here for this performance and cause.

Sarah - Georgetown DC - Photo Shoot

October 6, 2011 - It was an incredibly beautiful day and great weather for a photo shoot, so I photographed model Sarah in historic Georgetown DC. We were envisioning a somewhat vintage in foliage look. Sarah put on this long red dress and we found a spot that we felt captured our vision.

Even though we did the shoot around 2:30pm in the afternoon, we still made the photographs work and we felt comfortable working with each other. After shooting for awhile in this park-like place, Sarah changed outfits and we went to other locations in Georgetown, looking for more of that urban look. Sarah wore a stunning black and white striped dress, but modified the outfit by wearing a black wrap-around short skirt, and over the knee high black boots. It was a fantastic look and we used this row of columns as the background for an interesting perspective.

It was a long afternoon but worthwhile for the experience we had and the shots we got out of our time together.

A Tribute to Steve Jobs

October 5, 2011 - It was hard to believe in hearing the news that Steve Jobs passed away today at the age of 56 due to pancreatic cancer. Steve was an incredible visionary, computer genius, businessman, and an inspiration to so many.

Steve was the co-founder of Apple, Inc., and up till last August he was the CEO. The world has benefited from his passionate work and the products he developed. Here's to you Steve. Thank you for making the world and our lives better.

Dirty Vegas Video Shoot by 8112 Studios

October 2, 2011 - I was fortunate to be able to come to a video shoot for Dirty Vegas courtesy of 8112 Studios. The venue was the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington DC. The models and extras were to arrive at 2pm and I arrived soon after to take some behind the scenes pictures of the video shoot, as I had also done a behind the scenes coverage of another video shoot by 8112 Studios. I knew several people there as we are in the same industry, so it was good to see familiar faces and catch up a bit. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long as I had something to go to that was preplanned, but said I'd be back later on in the evening.

When I arrived back to the video shoot, everyone was on a break so it was good timing. I continued to take pictures as everyone resumed the shooting for a concert scene and then onto other scenes till we finished up at about 10pm. It was exciting to be there and it reminded me of being on set as I did a few modeling and extra jobs years ago. The hours are long and it can be tiring work along with a lot of waiting, yet in the end, it's rewarding to see the final product.

Six Months of Full Time Photography, Life Reflection, and Credentials Nostalgia

It's October 1st 2011 and it's like an anniversary of sorts. It's been six months since I've gone full time into photography, so that's something to celebrate but I also have to keep things moving with it. Like an anniversary or birthday there comes a deep reflection of life and it's moments. People will wish you a happy day and say congrats, and that's wonderful, but sometimes I think inside we feel a bit like there's got to be more to all this.

In growing up I recall my father and uncles who were into photography a bit, although I never was quite that interested at that time. I must have just been too busy having fun and thinking I would be a rock star someday. I did play guitar and tried to at least sing backup vocals. I was into role playing games, arcade games, and video games, yet I also enjoyed playing outside and was quite good at football in the neighborhood. I didn't have much cares and wasn't too disciplined or desirous of really taking steps to get into a career path. I would just let the chips fall where they may.

I've been into photography since High School as I remember taking a photography class. Then in college I took a couple more photography classes, but my major was varied for a little while dabbling in liberal arts, architecture, interior design, yet I finally settled on Electronic Graphic Design. My interest in photography seemed to wane a bit and my attempt to start courses in the New York Institute of Photography didn't go very far. Perhaps I didn't want to do the work and get critiqued. I hear that being critiqued is an essential part of growth. I would prefer genuine constructive criticism from someone who cares rather than someone who wants to rip my work apart. To use an old Army slogan, all this is to help you "be all you can be."

I'm reminded of my time in the U.S. Army where I was told that in basic training they tear you down to build you up again. I went in to the U.S. Army to serve my country and become a new man. They say that the Army is for some and not for others. When I entered the Army I walked into a new world. I started out as a private and didn't really have anything, but what they gave me. At the time I couldn't understand why the Drill Instructors seemed so harsh, yet just before my tenure in the Army was done I remember going into the Sports Club and talking with one of my Drill Instructors, and he talked with me like an old friend. It dawned on me that they did all this for my benefit, but I couldn't see that at the time of being "disciplined." It was for training. It was to make me into a soldier. That was their job and lives depended on it. I had some of the best years of my life as a soldier and they taught me values. I like to think that once a solder, always a soldier...as they say.

So as a photographer I enjoy life and capturing it. There was a span of several years after college where I wasn't so much into photography. I believe it's because I was involved in activities such as acting, dancing and sports that kept me focused on personal performance in addition to pursuing my career in graphic and web design. Eventually as I wanted to capture the fun times, I used disposable cameras, then used compact cameras, but it wasn't enough. People could see that I really enjoyed photography and wanted to improve. One year for my birthday amongst a group of friends I got a digital photography handbook and that added fuel to the fire. About four years ago I started using a DSLR camera and became more serious about photography as time went on. These past few years I've taken a more behind the camera role, but I still enjoy the occasional pastime interests.

In the past four years I've been able to attend and cover a lot of events and wonderful moments. It's been exciting to be able to go places and experience things. It's also been a lot of work and sacrifice, and it's not like in the Army where I was recognized and awarded for what I did. Being behind the camera I ensure that the event, it's cause and people are recognized and captured in camera, making images that last throughout the years. I feel a sense of contribution to humanity and history.

For some reason I've kept a lot of the badges, name tags and passes from events that I've covered, which you could call credentials nostalgia. It's a nice reminder like saving a ticket stub or postcard or anything that reminds you of an event. I suppose you could say I kind of think of these badges and name tags as sort of like medals and rewards. It's not something to be cocky about at all, as it's more of a sense of pride, like the pride of having served in the armed forces. Yes, that's what it's about...growth, appreciation, pride, purpose and passion. It's also all about love. With thanks to my Father.

MBFW S/S 2012 Covered for MyDCStyle

It's been a couple weeks since MBFW S/S 2012 and I wanted to show the photo galleries of the eight shows I covered there for MyDCStyle. I enjoyed being in NYC again and felt so much more comfortable traveling around there.

In walking up to Lincoln Center there was a incredible feeling of excitement. Although I was here last fall in covering S/S 2011, I was looking forward to seeing what changes had taken place and to seeing the new collections. The new front facade was cool and sleek and once I was through the doors I was in a fashion metropolis. It seemed like everybody there was uniquely dressed to impress and picture taking was the norm, as everybody seemed to want to capture and be captured by cameras.

Virgin Atlantic Celebrates 15 Years of Connecting Washington DC and London

September 22, 2011 - Virgin Atlantic Airways celebrated a milestone birthday marking 15 years of connecting two of the world's major airport hubs: Washington DC and London. There was a private celebration at Lincoln Restaurant in Washington DC.

The combination of Virgin Atlantic and Lincoln hosting this celebration made for a complementary display of decor and a delicious array of food and drink for guests. There were four ladies who are actual cabin crew members wearing their uniforms, greeting guests and serving drinks. Desserts were provided by Lincoln and also from Bakeshop in Arlington, VA.

Chris Rossi, Senior Vice President, North America, Virgin Atlantic was there along with other staff to say a few words about this birthday milestone and everyone celebrated throughout the night. Local celebrities such as Paul Wharton, Cat Ommaney and Mary Amons came out to celebrate, and Solange Knowles graced us with her presence and DJ skills, adding more groove to the evening. It was a jet set kind of celebration and the party was pretty fly, going on till about Midnight.

To further celebrate their anniversary, Virgin Atlantic is launching a week-long sale fare to and from Dulles International Airport to London Heathrow. The rates start at around $266 one way, so now is a good time to fly. I've always wanted to visit London. Maybe someday. We'll see. Check out the Virgin Atlantic website.

Pink Jams 'Pink Rocks the Runway' Launch Party

September 20, 2011 - Guests were asked to break out their best pink attire for a cocktail party to launch Pink Rocks the Runway (PRR) for 2011. The venue for this party was at one of DC's newest and hottest places called Dirty Bar, which is adjacent to Dirty Martini in a very popular area off Connecticut Ave, NW between M and N streets. Special appetizers and cocktail menu was available with a $1 from each cocktail and $2 from each specialty 'Rock the Pink' cocktails sold to benefit Pink Jams! and their breast cancer awareness efforts.

Pink Rocks the Runway™ (PRR) is an annual breast cancer awareness fashion event with couture fashion and live rock music (by Charm City Devils) to get the message out about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. The show is headlined by celebrity designer Christian Siriano who will showing his entire 2012 collection, and there will be several other designers presenting pieces from their collections. There will also be a pink couture gown fashion show that celebrates and features breast cancer survivors under 40. Athletes from the Washington Redskins and DC United will also be part of the show. PRR is hosted by and in support of Pink Jams! It works to promote breast cancer awareness, self-exam and mammograms for men and women under the age of 40.

Toward the end of the event, Pink Jams! will provide a special grant to the Capital Breast Care Center in support of their work. The Capital Breast Care Center was chosen as the 2011 community grant recipient and works to provide women in the Washington DC area with mammograms and health screenings regardless of their ability to pay for them. The CBCC is currently diagnosing breast cancer at two times the national rate.

Betsey Johnson Rocks at MBFW S/S 2012

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - On Monday afternoon September 12 I arrived in New York City to cover some of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for April of MyDCStyle. It was great to be back in NYC and I'm starting to get used to visiting. I felt very comfortable traveling from my hotel room to Lincoln Center and the first thing I did was pick up my credentials for photographing the shows. It was wonderful to see the courtyard and fountain again, and it was cool to see the sleek new facade for the MBFW entrance.

The Betsey Johnson runway show was going to start at 6pm in the Theatre, so I arrived early enough and waited in the media line to get in and get a spot on the media riser, also called the media pit. There's a good amount of waiting but it also gives the media time to prepare for covering the shows and to capture the people walking in, milling about and seated.

I've been to a Betsey Johnson fashion show as part of the ALL ACCESS: FASHION three-day event at Tysons Galleria in Tysons Corner, VA. If you've seen one Betsey's shows you'll know that she knows how to rock the runway with her clothing collection, the models and their expressiveness which is no doubt part of Betsey's style. Betsey knows how to put on a show! When the runway show started I'm sure eyes popped and jaws dropped because Betsey Johnson delivered another stunning runway show.

With Betsey Johnson's Spring 2012 collection she blends modern and vintage styles inspired by Brigette Bardot and Burlesque dancers of the 1940's. From flirty to sexy, patterns and peek-a-boos, and mixing prints, shapes and colors with splashes of glitter, Betsey creates an alluring and edgy collection that is sophisticated, sassy and playful.

After the show I ran into Jenny of the Betsey Johnson Georgetown DC store, so it was good to see a familiar face there. Even though this was the only runway show I photographed this day, it was an excellent one to cover. Oh what a night!

Photo Shoot for Elizabeth St. John

I've known couture designer Liz Stajka for a little while and have seen her Elizabeth St. John collections at various fashion shows in the DC area. Liz's work has also been featured recently as her designs have been worn by Miss DC 2010 Stephanie Williams and when New Jersey Housewife Teresa Giudice recently renewed her wedding vows. The wedding was featured in In Touch magazine. I have been looking forward to working more with her and I was invited to take photographs of Elizabeth St. John dresses with John Barley of SilverLux Studios.

The photo shoot was to have photos to preview the Elizabeth St. John collection that will be shown on September 24th for "Nuit de la Mode," an Art Soiree/Alliance Francais event where fashion, culture and art collide. The Salon Emage Style Team will styled hair and did makeup for the shoot and they will also be doing that for the Nuit de la Mode event.

The location of the shoot was the gorgeous Hillwood Estate and Museum where the event will happen presenting the latest ready-to-wear and bridal collections by Elizabeth St. John, Camille Pascal, and Marina Asta. Tickets for the event may be purchased at the The Art Soiree website below.

Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Expo - DC

September 10, 2011 - In an interview by Andrew Ramos of photographer Nigel Barker who is also a judge on America's Next Top Model, Nigel was asked why he came back to the Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle (FBL) Expo a second time. He basically iterated that it's because it was a fun day of style, fashion and beauty where he can meet the fans, and hang out. Nigel continued on saying that he enjoys sharing and of course these subjects are things that he's passionate about. There are lots of questions people have about the industry and there are answers to be found there in the six hours of the event, and there are also lots of experts there.

FBL is in it's third year now and we can see how many people in Washington DC have a growing interest in the fashion, beauty and lifestyle industry. Consumers and vendors alike are very involved in this event and many other events related to it. Along with Nigel being the host, Project Runway Season 5 Runner-up Korto Momolu was a featured guest designer and co-host. One of the featured models who walked in the runway shows of the day was America's Next Top Model Cycle 8 Winner Jaslene Gonzales, and the crowd cheered every time she appeared. DJ Neekola was there providing some energetic tunes to rev up the atmosphere and add to the high energy of the runway shows.

Another noted person there was sports personality and former Redskins linebacker Lavar Arrington, who currently hosts a WJFK radio talk show and DC50’s “SportsWeek with LaVar Arrington.” Arrington was featured in an afternoon seminar about wellness and fitness, and it was also an inspirational time of sharing.

One of DC's style icons Paul Wharton was also at FBL throughout the day. He met fans and had a booth at FBL to share about his new television pilot he is producing called “Paul Wharton Style.”

The event was produced by WDCW-TV, Tribune Broadcasting (the CW affiliate in Washington, DC) and the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce. FBL 2011 presenting sponsors were Cole Stevens, Med Tech and Salon Virage, and there were many other FBL Sponsors that helped to make FBL 2011 a success.

We all know what happened on 9/11/01. We remember. Through the years till this day of 9/11/11 we reflect upon this history. We have our memories, memorials and resources to draw from and it's become a part of us. We appreciate those who have served and made sacrifices and it continues. We have all experienced loss of some kind. We know we must move on. Were doing the best we can to live the life we're called to live, and may we do that together. We don't know how long we'll live, but it's good to focus on how we're striving to live well each day. Even in such an imperfect world, may we live a life full of quality moments. As we continue on, we must inevitably consider our investment in the future and where we'll end and live ever after. Hope to see you in that perfect place.

NYFW Flashback - S/S 2011 - 9/12/10

September 12, 2010 - As part of New York Fashion Week there were some satellite locations for shows. At the Metropolitan Pavilion I was there to photograph the shows for Gudnitz Couture and Belle Parish (Ali Landry). I was photographing on behalf of Elaine Mensah of Svelte LLC. James Cornwell who works on Fashion BS with Elaine was working backstage on hair, makeup and styling.

Later in the afternoon Elaine and I went to 500 Skylight West to see the Korto Momolu fashion show. We ran into Krystal Ugo from T.H.E Artist Agency. Several celebrities were in the building and anyone who is a fan of watching Project Runway Season 7 would likely recognize Anthony Williams and Jesus Estrada. In the front row was Tyson Beckford and friends. It was a great location and show. It's great to see this Project Runway Season 5 Runner-up keep on producing.

Fashion's Night Out - Georgetown, Washington DC

September 8, 2010 - Fashion's Night Out was IN! With so much buzz about Fashion's Night Out (FNO) in NYC, DC and worldwide, many people enjoyed being a part of it. This was FNO's third year as a global initiative in celebrating fashion, restoring consumer confidence, boosting the industry's economy, and putting the fun back in shopping. From Manhattan to Milan and from Atlanta to Australia, stores in over 250 cities and 1000 retailers in NYC alone, FNO is fashion's best party in history.

Fashion's Night Out started in 2009 with a partnership between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. FNO is getting bigger and better each year. It is fitting that FNO is in the same week as New York Fashion Week so it complements it well and adds to all the interest and investment in fashion.

There were over 100 stores, restaurants and salons that took part in FNO Georgetown which was presented by the Georgetown Business Improvement District along with the 2011 Fashion’s Night Out Host Committee. Thanks to all who were a part of FNO Georgetown, from the planners to the retailers for putting on special events, and to the consumers who came out to be a part of FNO. Despite the rain in DC, the party went on.

MBFW S/S 2011 - Flashback 9/11/10

It was the first time that MBFW was at it's new location at Lincoln Center and the morning of September 11, remembering what happened on this day in 2001 was surely on the minds of everyone. As much as this day was a somber reflection, it was also a day that MBFW and NYC did their best to move on and continue to live their lives. The MBFW shows for the day still went on.

I arrived to Lincoln Center early and saw Diego Binetti’s collection presented at the box which marked his first year showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. His collection seemed to draw from Mother Nature giving an earthy and yet ethereal look and feel to his presentation at the box.

Next up was Cynthia Rowley's show on The Stage. Cynthia's collection made a statement with circles with some seemingly "hole punched" and other circles embossed in a pattern. Much of the fabric had sheerness to it and the colors were mostly a muted palette yet some multi-colored striped shirts were added in along with a splash of mustard yellow. The collection felt like a blast from the past with 70's style, yet the circle cut-outs also seemed to peek into a futuristic theme.

Another show on The Stage was Z Spoke by Zac Posen and it came with a rainbow of colors and youthful playfulness. The collection embodied a combination of faces, fruits, some flower power and oodles of flirtatiousness. Adding to the fun was the MBFW debut of Steve Madden shoes in Zac's Z Spoke collection for this runway show. The collection rated high on the fun factor.

Everywhere one looked, fashion made a statement and throughout the day several celebrities were part of the scene. Some of the celebrities spotted this day in the front rows of shows and walking around were Tinsley Mortimer, Nicky Hilton, Rebecca Romijn, Jay Manuel, and J Alexander. Thanks to Svelte LLC for having me photograph MBFW. In hanging out with Elaine Mensah and James Cornwell, I was introduced to several fashion industry insiders, and that always makes for a good picture.

Product Review: Military Tech Laptop Case

I like excellent, functional and stylish gear, so when I walked into the ACE Photo camera store in Ashburn VA to kill some time and browse, I found something I had to have. The ACE Photo camera store has an extensive collection of photography gear including a big room of camera bags and cases. It can be tough going into a camera store and "convincing myself" of what I need, but I don't want to have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Getting a new bag to hold my laptop and some other gear was on my mind recently as I travel with my laptop from time to time.

I already have a very slim laptop case, but there are times I wished the bag had just a little more room. There are times when I need to carry my laptop comfortably for lengthy amounts of time and even take it with me while biking. So in a sense I also wanted a messenger-style bag, but it had to have a low profile and not be bulky. I was specifically looking for a durable bag that could carry my laptop in a variety of ways. I also wanted the bag to stay close against my back while allowing me to carry other things on me and being able to access them easily.

Being properly equipped gives me a sense that I can accomplish a task at hand. Maybe it's a guy thing and watching action movies or television shows with lots of cool gear in them is exciting. It reminds me of the military too, as I served active duty in the U.S. Army, and I enjoyed being geared up and ready to move.

Sometimes I wish I could design and produce my own products because it would fit the specifications of what I need. After practically looking at every bag at the store, I purchased the Naneu Military Tech MT-17 Laptop Case. When I got home I took a couple photographs of the laptop case to post here, yet check out the NANEU website for a more in-depth look at the case and it's features along with their other products. As the NANEU website says, it's "Not.Just.Another.Bag." Hooah!

MBFW S/S 2011 Flashback - 9/10/10

In reflection of last fall at MBFW, I wanted to share more about my experiences as we lead up to MBFW S/S 2012. Just this past year was an amazing milestone in fashion history. To think that New York Fashion Week started in 1943, which was then called Press Week. It was the first organized fashion week in the world and ever since then it's made quite an impact in society, both in form and message with passion and purpose. It is showing the world more of who we are and how we live.

The excitement of MBFW continued as I walked toward Lincoln Center in expectation of the kind of things I experienced the day before and more. My day started out with seeing the presentation of Tadashi Shoji in a box location where models stood in an enchanted forest-like setting. The designs were elegant showing a subtle mix of greys and beige colors. Tadashi was there in the crowd greeting guests and it was a magical experience in seeing the presentation.

The next show on my schedule was BCBGMAXAZRIA and the elegance in the clothing shown continued. There was a sense of softness yet modernism in this palette of beautifully practical and wearable clothing for any day.

I had not seen Edition by Georges Chakra before, but was impressed by the beautiful combination of colors and construction of the clothing. The designs seemed to lend a nod to medieval times in terms of the theme, yet they were just as fitting for the modern-day woman.

After a day at Lincoln Center there was still much to look forward to as this evening was Fashion's Night Out. I went to Macy's Herald Square, the largest department store in the world and throngs of fans turned out too. It was a star-studded event at Macy's as P. Diddy, J-Lo, and Kimora Lee Simmons turned out to celebrate FNO with consumers and fans. Oh what a day and night.

MBFW S/S 2011 - Flashback 9/9/10

It's that time of year and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) is here. From September 8-15 New York City and the world over will be shining ever so brightly with what the fashion world has to offer. The Spring/Summer 2012 collections will be shown at Lincoln Center and other NYC area locations and be broadcasted to the world during New York Fashion Week. Indeed Fashion's Night Out on the 8th will be represented in cities all over the globe to celebrate the love of fashion where consumers, designers and celebrities will come together.

For the first time MBFW was held at Lincoln Center in September 2010, moving from the tents of Bryant Park and gaining an additional 17,000 square feet of space. The year before in 2009, the world witnessed the infusion of technology and innovation all the more in the fashion world as some designers broadcasted, marketed and sold their collections online. Fashion and technology were mixed together as some designers had iPhone applications and Vivienne Tam had models walk the runway carrying Hewlett Packard mini notebook computers. Along with the new location at Lincoln Center came a partnership with Fashion GPS that offered quick check-in and seating for guests at shows.

This year the front end design of Lincoln Center has a more modern and sleek look to it, yet it's also carrying a message of employing the use of digital integration and other technological enhancements as fashion walks forward to the future.

I was able to photograph the Spring/Summer 2011 collections at Lincoln Center last fall through Svelte TV, and how exciting that it was the first time MBFW was at Lincoln Center. Mostly everything was in that one place so it made it easier to get around. People watching and photographing is an attraction in itself. It's a rush to get to a show and there there's the wait, but it's worth it for seeing a runway show. I wanted to share a portfolio of pictures I took on September 9th 2010 in which I included images from Christian Siriano's show. Enjoy the look back and get excited about S/S 2012.

Luke's Wings Endless Summer Beach Party

September 1, 2011 - It was a beautiful night as summer was still in full effect. Luke’s Wings held its 3rd Annual “Endless Summer Beach Party” sponsored by HeiTech Services Inc. The chic L2 Lounge in Georgetown was again the venue for this annual bash and the theme for what to wear was Saint-Tropez style. It's good to know that a lot of tickets were purchased for this event, discounted tickets were given to uniformed service members and the event was free for wounded warriors.

Even though the sandy beaches and palm trees were a bit far away, Luke’s Wings transformed L2 into as much of a tropical paradise as possible. Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails, gourmet hors d'eourves from Leopold’s Café, beach games and prizes. This event raised over $7,000 and all proceeds go towards Luke’s Wings to purchase airplane tickets for hospitalized wounded warriors and their families. Luke's Wings is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization and is always in need of donations to support the constant needs of soldiers and their families all over the country.

Morgan in Adams Morgan

Given the name of the model for this shoot being Morgan and having a photo shoot done in Adams Morgan, one might wonder if there is any relation. It's more of a coincidence.

On August 30th our little photo shoot crew ventured around the heart of Adams Morgan and attracted stares and questions from onlookers and it almost felt like we were adding to the already vibrant nightlife of this area. Those who have spent time in Adams Morgan can see that it is an area full of cultural diversity and artistic character. During the day it's wonderful to see the neighborhood consisting of 19th and early 20th-century row houses and apartment buildings. The intersection of 18th St and Columbia Road is considered the center of Adams Morgan and going along 18th Street you will find a bevy of restaurants and bars where many people flock to in the evenings.

Seeing that it was toward the end of August where many feel like the summer is close to over, it seemed fitting to capture this time and place for a photo shoot. I have an upcoming photo walk in Adams Morgan on October 2nd, where people are welcome to attend and learn more about photography while in a creative and social environment. There is also an Adams Morgan Day Festival on September 11 from Noon to 7pm. It's a global community of cultures celebrating together.

I'm excited to have been accepted to lead a photo walk for Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk and my group will be going through Adams Morgan in DC. I've been to Adams Morgan several times and find it to be culturally diverse, artful, interesting and raw. It reminds me a little of being in NYC and just by walking around, I feel more creative. Upcoming Photo Walk and Photo Event Flashbacks

August 26, 2011 - I received an email a couple days ago saying that my Photo Walk Leader application has been approved for Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk happening on October 1st and 2nd. I just need to set up my photo walk page and choose which day (Oct 1 or Oct 2nd) and the two hour or so time frame for the walk. We'll also have a place to share a meal and pictures afterward. I'm going to be doing the photo walk in Adams Morgan in Washington, DC. This is a culturally diverse area and it has a lot of character to it. I spent some time a couple weeks ago and scouted out a possible route for a photo walk, considering it was going to be approved, which thankfully it was recently.

I wanted to check out Adams Morgan again this afternoon and add to my scouting trip of this photo walk. A couple weeks ago I found the FotoDC gallery at 1838 Columbia Rd. NW, DC, but did not go into the gallery till today. I talked to some of the staff about the upcoming photo walk I was planning and it so happened that Theo Adamstein walked in (with a DSLR on his shoulder) so it was good timing as Theo is a photographer, architect, and founder of FotoWeek DC/FotoDC.

I remembered Theo from a photo exhibit event called FLASH which was March 17-April 17. FotoDC partnered with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) to put this event on. I attended a VIP opening of the FLASH exhibit event and photographed it for a magazine. I talked with the FotoDC staff about incorporating FotoDC into the Worldwide Photo Walk group I'm leading in Adams Morgan soon, and we could see the mutual benefits for everyone involved. I perused the popular library of photo books in the gallery which were available to the public during FotoWeek. The gallery currently holds the FotoSpace exhibition: Speaking to Silence. It's in partnership with The Pulitzer Center and Human Rights Watch with work by Platon, Marcus Bleasdale, and Stephanie Sinclair.

Another flashback happened in wishing a photographer friend a Happy Birthday today, and we were reminded of a birthday party my friends tried to surprise me with at my photographer friend's place. It turns out that one of the gifts I received for my birthday was a digital photographer's handbook written by Tom Ang. I had found that book not long ago and inside the front cover is the name and date of my friend who gave me the book, and this was back in 2004.

It's been awhile and time certainly does fly. I fairly recently photographed my photographer friend's sister's engagement party in DC. It was a nice event and it reminded me of my photographer friend and the further encouragement I received back then to get more into photography which people could see that I was passionate about. The passion ensues and it's partly because of these memorable events, photos, and friends. Keep the passion alive. Keep walking.

Day & Night at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

On August 22, 2011, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opened to the public and I wanted to visit it on this opening day. The dedication ceremony for the memorial will be held on Sunday August 28, 2011, which is the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Site is located just beyond the Northwest corner of the Tidal Basin, by Independence Ave and West Basin Drive. It's location about midway between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial which is in a relatively straight line seen from an aerial view. The location signifies part of the area in the nation's march toward freedom.

It was on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that Dr. King delivered his first national address "Give Us the Ballot." Then Dr. King returned to the Lincoln Memorial in supporting the March on Washington in 1963, where in a defining moment in the movement for civil rights, Dr King delivered his memorable "I Have a Dream" speech before an audience of over 200, 000 people.

Dr King's speech was a reflection of his belief in the words of the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence which he referred to as that "promissory note to which every American was to fall heir."

The figure of Dr King emerges from the granite Stone of Hope which stands 28 feet 6 inches, and is the work of Master sculptor Lei Yixin. The statue is a testament to Dr King's courageous leadership in the civil rights movement, as said "I was a drum major for justice peace and righteousness." The Mountain of Despair serves as the central entrance to the memorial, with water descending from fountains on either side representing vitality and life. The Stone of Hope with Dr King's resolute figure is past the Mountain of Despair and faces the Tidal Basin and symbolizing opportunities for advancement in the future. The selected quotations on the inscription walls speak of the four main messages of Dr King which are justice, democracy, hope, and love.

Many people visited and were moved by the memorial. I visited late in the afternoon yet was drawn back to the memorial to capture it again during sunset, and so these pictures show the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial during night and day. It seems to suggest the movement from darkness to the light. How fitting that one of my favorite quotations on the inscription walls says: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that."

INK Cosmetics Launch Party & Fashion Industry Network Event (August 20, 2011)

It was highly anticipated evening and how exciting it is to have a launch party with much to celebrate. There was also much to do in preparing for the event and having many things come into place. A fashion show was a highlight of the evening and Ink Cosmetics had their crew there early along with staff from the W Salon. Earlier this year Ink Cosmetics started working out of the W Salon to complement one another and offer more to customers.

Celebrity Makeup Artista Anna Castillo was born in Brooklyn, NY but was raised all over the world due to her father's military service. Anna has always had a love for makeup and practiced on her friends in high school. At 19 Anna moved out on her own and entered the Air Force, and Anna continues to serve active duty in the military. Anna now resides in DC and has made a lot of press regarding her work. Launching her cosmetics line has been a dream and is now a reality, and she's done a lot of amazing work over the years to bring her to this place. The philosophy of Ink Cosmetics "is to help everyone achieve their beauty goals and to make them feel fabulous in every way."

There was a crowd waiting to get into L2 and when the doors opened at 8pm, people streamed in and the first 100 guests received "I ♥ ink...cosmetics" swag bag filled with a large size cosmetics/tools plus hair care samples and special sponsor surprises. Red Carpet Interviews were done with DC on Heels Host Markette Smith Sheppard and Emcee DC on Heels Host Vanessa Camozzi welcomed guests. One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by Grammy Nominated Recording Artist Carolyn Malachi who sang for the audience. Vanessa Camozzi got back on the mic and introduced Anna Castillo, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Owner of Ink Cosmetics. Anna introduced sponsors and thanked them and guests for being there.

Then it was fashion show time with models showcasing designs by WELLTA, hair styled by W Salon and makeup by the different faces of ink...cosmetics. The fashion show started out with Miss Maryland USA 2011 Allyn Rose and followed by seven other models, and the guests were crowded all about the space of L2 as the models walked the perimeter of the lounge. It was wonderful to have Allyn Rose open the fashion show and she loved the dress she wore. We were also blessed to have two other beauty queens in attendance: Miss Virginia US 2011 Katie Barrie and Miss DC USA 2011 Heather Swann.

Guests admired the clothing designs, as they were a new take on the timeless and classic little black dress. Fashion designer Wellta moved to NYC in 2001 and attended FIT, graduating with a fashion design degree. In early 2011 Wellta decided to launch a collection of her label WELLTA. It's a new women's wear line that will offer unique and exclusive hand-made dresses. Wellta now resides in DC with plans to offer something unique to the area and we saw a taste of that with this fashion show.

After the show pictures were taken and interviews done, guests were invited to stay and continue networking at this industry event while DJ Neekola spun some hip tunes. It was a great evening as guests enjoyed the ambiance, mingling and even a little dancing. After all, it's a launch party. Congratulations.

Product Showcase: Anji Mountain Bamboo Chairmat and Rug Co.

August 18, 2011 - Sticker shocked, but she likes it! I've got to say I'm impressed with this product that my mother bought today for the computer area downstairs at her house. At an earlier visit to an office supply store months ago we had seen this bamboo chairmat from Anji Mountain. It looked nice and it seemed like it was of great quality, but we didn't get it at that time. Yet today was the day as my mother wanted a chairmat. We didn't know the price till there was a price check on it and the look on my mother's face was priceless. She still got the product, and it was easy to roll out and put under the computer desk. Nice, solid!

It's interesting that we visited a camera store before going to the office supply store and I had a conversation with my mother about prints and the various places she could physically go to get prints. She was considering places and although other places are cheaper, I stressed the end result of quality.

I checked out the website of Anji Mountain and was pleased with the site. When I first saw the product and after visiting the website, it made me think of that movie House of Flying Daggers as there is a lot of bamboo in some scenes in that movie. It's a good reminder of how a product can bring out memories and add to our lifestyle.

So back to the Anji Mountain website and company, where there's a nice picture of a mountainside and a statement that says "Just what the world needs now eco-friendly natural fiber rugs." That got my attention and made me feel good to know that we're helping our environment. In reading the mission statement of the company, I can see what they're about and I like what they stand for. It's cool to see that they are a family business and again I can see a focus on quality and principles. This experience today made me think more about photography, business, service and the quality of the products delivered. Way to go Anji Mountain.

Picture Perfect Day - PUG - Friend's Birthday

August 15, 2011 - I thoroughly enjoyed being outside on such a gorgeous day, but had stopped inside of Tysons Corner Center to do just a little shopping and browsing. On my way out of the shopping center I took this picture with my iPhone. From where I was at, there was a street sign and traffic lights in the frame, but I took it anyway and rather liked how the picture turned out with those elements in it. The main focus was obviously the gorgeous clouds. It's amazing how fast summer is flying by, but I am also looking forward to Autumn.

In the evening I went to my photographer friend's house as the Pictage Users Group (PUG) in the area was having a highlight on Garrett Hubbard and his photography studio. Sarah Hodzic was the host of the PUG meeting and several photographers came out for the meeting. After a brief social with food and drink, Garrett and his wife Allison (business partner) shared about their photography studio. Garrett showed some of his favorite photos, mostly from this year and talked a little about how they capture a wedding day. Garrett also showed images from a wedding he recently photographed and where I was the second photographer/assistant. I was glad to help a brother out." Garrett's wife was also helping out at that wedding, and photographs were taken at The W Hotel and at the LongView Gallery in DC.

There was a mention about John Harrington's book "Best Business Practices for Photographers." The business side of photography is an important aspect that can seem "less important" than the photography side, but they go hand in hand. John Harrington was one of the speakers of a fairly recent NPPA Business Blitz seminar held at the USA Today building in McLean, VA.

After the studio highlight sharing time, each photographer told the group a bit about them and their photography and what works for them in getting noticed for their photography and a lot of it had to do with personality, networking and social media in addition to great images. It was an inspirational time and we're all looking forward to growing our businesses as photographers.

It was late in the evening, but I said I was going to attend a birthday celebration at Lincoln restaurant in DC, and I arrived in time to see the birthday girl with several of her friends. It was nice to have a couple cupcakes baked by love from one the friends of the birthday girl. There's something about cupcakes, even a single one, and there's something about a candle and it's flame. Light is beautiful and life is beautiful.

Flash Market - A Pop-Up Shop Extravaganza

On August 13, 2011 from 12-4pm, Hillyer Art Space hosted their first ‘Flash Market’ event which was a pop up shop extravaganza showcasing local designers and design makers, plus vintage sellers and consignment stores. ‘Flash Market’ promotes buying locally which supports the growing population of designers and design makers in the DC area. I was able to stop in and took a few pictures of the event and also did a photo shoot for ARTAYA. It was also good to see Bianca from America's Next Top Model Cycle 13 attending the event.

Turn The Key Tour with JB & DeEtte Sallee and Lori Nordstrom

August 12, 2011 - When I heard of the Turn The Key Summer Tour was going to be coming to Arlington, VA, I knew I wanted to attend it. I usually try and attend photography seminars and workshops to learn something new, reevaluate what I'm doing, gain inspiration and try to take what I've learned and implement changes to how I'm running my photography business.

Ever since seeing JB & DeEtte Sallee speak at Imaging USA in Nashville in January 2010 I've been an admirer of them and their photography. They seemed like a fun couple and I liked their photography style and was inspired by their success. I also saw them at WPPI last year.

The Turn the Key Tour seminar made a stop at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington, VA near Washington D.C. An hour before the seminar started there was a small trade show so attendees could see some of the speaker's favorite products and services. It was good having the vendors there as it's always good to see the latest resources.

Before this seminar I had heard of Lori Nordstrom but had never seen her speak in person, so I was looking forward to learning from her as well as Sallee Photography. Their experience combined spans 23 years in the wedding and portrait industry, and we also got to hear from local portrait artist Jeff Lubin as he opened up the tour speaking about portraiture.

In just flipping through the workbook that they gave everyone who registered, I was pleased with the amount of instruction and personal details that JB, DeEtte and Lori shared in it. Their seminar is great for new photographers as well as seasoned photographers, giving fresh ideas on how to take one's business to the next level. They shared frankly about past experiences and what has worked and is working to keep their studios growing in today's industry and market. Hearing JB and DeEtte take turns speaking was fun and it got pretty interesting with their choice of words used. :- It was rather comedic and a reflection of their charismatic personality. Lori's presentation was solid and practical. She was dressed very well too. Their tour is an insightful and helpful resource in unlocking your studios potential.

I was one of several attendees that got a shirt. I think it helped that I was sitting up front and about five feet from JB when he was about to throw the shirts into the audience. I stood up, raised my hands and yelled with excitement. He couldn't miss me. :D I'm glad I made it to see them on this tour and was able to talk to them before, during and after the seminar. I'm eager to implement what I've learned and apply it to my photography and life.

Dog Days of Summer Social with Guest of a Guest

August 10, 2011 - It's the Dog Days of Summer and the heat has been consistently beating down on the DC area, and every now and then it's good to have some reprieve. Although it's fun to do activities outside, it's always a good time for a happy hour. For this social with Guest of a Guest the venue was Co. Co. Sala in DC, a restaurant and chocolate boutique renowned for their savory food, signature cocktails and decadent desserts.

The hosts for this chocolate and bubbles social were: Bill Brewer, Ava Deylami, Robert Flock, Richard Lee, Cori Sue Morris, Chase Noyes, and Co Co Sala's Hollis Pica.

A Guest of a Guest photographer was there to snap pics of guests and I took several pics myself to tell of the evening. The last time I was here I photographed an engagement party, and this time it felt like a media event with the step and repeat banner up. Guests seemed to enjoy being photographed as they were in good spirits and company. It's safe to say, guests left feeling happy considering everything.

Proof of Life

August 10, 2011 - Six minutes and twenty-seven seconds. I hope you can take that amount of time to watch this photo short posted by RC Concepcion as a guest blogger on Scott Kelby's blog. It is one of the most moving photo shorts I've seen. It is a beautiful touching story of dreams, inspiration, passion, friendship, sacrifice and love.

I've taken pictures of people and have often said: "See, now there's proof that you were here." Yes, it was an event, experience, and moment captured and to be remembered. It's proof of life. There is a story behind the picture(s) and this photo short speaks volumes.

Okay, so it's been more than six minutes and 27 seconds by the time you've gone through all this, and I actually watched this photo short three times. This short encapsulates why I love life and photography. Life can go by so quickly and it's good to be able to pause and reflect on it, and gain insights from experiences. I want to do more than just see pictures, I want to know the story behind them, and in doing that I believe life and people will be enriched and appreciated more. Live on.

The Donovan House Hotel - A Rooftop With a Circular View

August 9, 2011 - It was a gorgeous night to be on a rooftop in Washington DC and one of the best places in my opinion is the Donovan House Hotel rooftop. The openness and vibe of the rooftop along with it's furniture and decor gives it a Miami feel and appeal. Sophisticated drinks along with upbeat yet soothing tunes from the DJ and a cosmopolitan crowd keeps everything cool.

One of the nicest views around is in looking Northwest and seeing the skyline and sunset over Thomas Circle, where Massachusetts Ave, Vermont Ave, 14th Street, and M Street, N.W. intersect. The National City Christian Church makes for a beautiful addition to the backdrop with it's steeple reaching high and being prominent in many a picture for it's location. A bronze statue of General George Henry Thomas (a prominent commander during the American Civil War) on horseback is a centerpiece of the circle.

There is a sense of time slowing down when upon the rooftop and watching the sunset and the people and cars below go their own ways. To those on the Donovan House Hotel rooftop, they've arrived and are relaxing in a little rooftop paradise.

The W Salon - West Meets East

August 8, 2011 - Having photographed many fashion events in the DC area, I've come to know some salons who have supported these shows with hair and makeup services. One such salon which I found a great connection with is "The W Salon" or just "W Salon." This salon is sometimes mistaken for being a part of or in The W Hotel in Washington DC. The hotel doesn't have a salon, but the W Salon opened for business in February 2010 and it's seen a lot of growth since then.

The W Salon gets it's name from it's owner Souny West who is from Laos and she's been in the USA since age two, and eventually she moved to VA at age sixteen. The W Salon has made waves in the DC area, getting buzz from clients and the media. With the W Salon being in Burke, VA it has done rather well in Fairfax County and beyond, attracting clients from all over. The W Salon and the experience there can be described as clean, modern, colorful and comfortable. I believe their signature green splash of color theme accentuates the freshness and vitality of the salon. To provide a total service experience, Anna Castillo, Celebrity Makeup Artist and owner of Ink Cosmetics, LLC was added to the salon's space bringing professional makeup styles seen on fashion runways from across the world to the W Salon.

Souny wanted me to come out and photograph her and her staff at the salon, as their staff has grown in numbers and needed updated images reflecting their staff and the salon's growth. I'm not a stranger to salons, having grown up with a mother who was a hair stylist for many years. It was good to visit The W Salon and meet the staff who were very friendly and hospitable. Having photographed portrait shots and group shots I could see their unique personality. Even with an array of diversity with the staff, they all seemed like a family.

In talking with Souny she desires for her salon to be a place of community and to have that coffeehouse feel, as well as being fun and youthful. The events that the salon has put on has become the talk of the town so to speak, especially when it's hard for people to leave because they enjoy them so much. Souny loves her staff and the staff gets along well and even brings in dishes for each other.

Andy Zipf: Jealous Hands Tour - Arlington, VA

August 4th, 2011 - When Andy Zipf is set to perform at a venue, I try to be there and I've attended and photographed several of his shows, even one in an Apple store...yes, an Apple store (in a big shopping mall). When I heard about Andy performing at IOTA Club & Cafe in Arlington VA, I wanted to go, but I also had a lot (and still do) of work to catch up on. After a meetup with photographers earlier this evening, I went home, but then something drew me back out. It must have been the lingering echo of Andy's ethereal vocals and memories of his superb live performances that got me packing sufficient camera gear and then back on the road again to IOTA.

On the way to IOTA, I recalled how photographer Zack Arias enjoys Zipf's music after first hearing it on one of Andy's tours. Zack knows of the talent in Andy Zipf and how his words and music are pervasive and engaging. Knowing this, Zack requested Andy Zipf to come and perform along with Meghan Arias at Zack's OneLight Mixer on July 1st 2010 at BOSSA in Adams Morgan, which was the mixer before his OneLight Workshop in DC.

It was the Jealous Hands Release Show at IOTA and several other musicians also performed earlier in the evening there (Kirsten Thien, The Riverbreaks, Justin Trawick, and Bobbie Bare Jr). I arrived just before Andy and the band were to perform. I had my Nikon D7000 camera with a 35mm and 50mm lens and I know I didn't want to use any flash (and it wasn't allowed anyway).

The concert started and Andy and the band played a fantastic set of songs that I believe reached deeply into heart and soul. It's the nature of Andy's words and music to capture one's attention. A quote from Paste Magazine on Andy's website says "Jealous Hands shows off his capacity to produce one great hook after another." DC SMUG with Justine Ungaro

On a beautiful August 4th evening in DC about 30 photographers gathered for a DC SMUG (Smugmug Users Group) meeting and heard from guest speaker photographer Justine Ungaro. The meeting took place in the new studio of photographer Moshe Zusman in DC, who is well known in the DC area.

We were glad to welcome Justine back in the area, as she was raised in the DC area and works out of both the DC and Los Angeles area. Justine is a graduate of Virginia Tech and began her photography career in 2003 and then moved to Los Angeles in 2006. Justine is known for her classic and elegant style and photographs 20 weddings annually in the US and abroad and also does child and family portraiture in the Los Angeles area.

It was great to gather together and see other photographers and stay inspired. That's what we need to do, as it's hard to go it alone in the photography business. So may you take your photography to the next level, whatever that is for you. Keep your head up and your camera out.

Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk - Coming Up

It was announced on August 1st on Scott Kelby's blog about his Worldwide Photo Walk on October 1st and 2nd. This will be the fourth annual event, yet this time it's happening over two days and you get the convenience of picking one of the two days that best fit your schedule. It's with the input given over the years that Scott and his crew can make adjustments to this event. These photo walks have a great turnout are a lot of fun. It's a time of discovery and learning too.

I thought I would share some of my favorite images from last year's worldwide photo walk at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. I had not seen the cemetery before, so it's something I definitely wanted to see and to photographing it was a very introspective and moving experience. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, seeing the cemetery brought back memories and made me even more appreciative of the service and sacrifices made for our country.

Hope you can get out for the worldwide photo walk, but if not, you can always get people together and go on one yourselves. Here's to getting out more and shooting.

The Black Eyed Peas Invade District

July 30, 2011 - The Black Eyes Peas pumped it louder at District Lounge in Adams Morgan of Washington DC when they made an appearance there. BEP was set to play at Merriweather Post Pavilion that evening, so when they wanted to party on, they chose District. From my vantage point I saw and photographed will.i.am, Fergie, and Taboo as they took to the DJ Booth and roused the crowd with words and music, mixing in some of their songs to energetic tunes. The Black Eyed Peas made for a stellar night and the fans showed the love.

Rani Emaan Georgetown DC Store Launch

Rani Emaan: Brand New to Georgetown - I think it's rather fitting that my first post after my blogging hiatus (and after saying I'm back) is to share about this store launch event from the House of Rani Emaan.

This fashion line was founded by two friends, Deeba and Farzeen and their label represents the names of their first-born daughter's and is a way for them to create a legacy for generations to come. Their collections show a beautiful array of fabrics, colors, embroideries in Resham silk, beadwork, Wasli, Zardozi and semi-precious stone work.

Rani Emaan is a multinational brand worn by women in South Asia, UK and the USA. The collection is currently displayed in New York and Rawalpindi near Islamabad, Pakistan. Plans are in the works for openings in Manhattan and Ft. Lauderdale.

This event invited guests to an evening of High Fashion and Red Carpet Glamour at the House of Rani Emaan at 3509 M Street NW in Georgetown, DC. The location is in a high profile location within sight of the Key Bridge.

It was a very busy year in 2010 and I went on a hiatus from posting on this blog. My last post on this blog was in September of 2010, but I wanted to come back to blogging. I may get a new blog someday, but this is what I'm using for now. So here's to getting back into the blogging saddle again. It's about time I share more of what's been going on with Vithaya Photography.
